Andrea and her partner have to write 3 more pages. This is because you add both % to get 75%. Then you have to multiply 12 by 75% to get 9. After that you subtract 9 from 12 to get 3.

first 50% plus 25% equals 75%
then you can do 75% of 12
75% =.75
of = multiplication
.75 • 12 which should equal 9
so they have 9 pages left
