Mendel used pea plants to study the genetics which is the passing of inheritable traits from parents to their offspring.
Pea plants are unique plants with special characteristics, hence the reason why mendel selected this type of plant for his experimental purposes. Some of these reasons include;
- Pea plants are bisexual; these are plants that have both the male and female reproductive organ/system. In the case of pea plants they have both pistil and stamens
- Pea plants have the ability to grow within a short period of time
- Pea plants have different traits that can easily be identified, this way it will be very easy to identify various part of the flower
