They only really have one way to invade the city, making it easy for Constantinople to defend themselves, unless if they somehow had a Navy in 500 AD or whatever
Constantinople was at the tip of a peninsula so there was only one direction to attack from on land. So rather than having to defend, say, 40 miles of walls and getting surprised somewhere, they just had to defend, say, 10.
