The Raute are a very small tribe in Nepal who are recognized in an official capacity as such by the Government. Numbering about an estimated 160 as of 2017, they are quite nomadic and often do not stay in an area for more than a maximum of 5 months. The Nepalese government is attempting to resettle them, by force if necessary which in some cases has been successful but quite a number of them are still resisting.
Their society is primarily built on hunting and gathering. They hunt langur and macaque monkeys as well as other types of bush-meat. They also gather forest produce such as tubers, fruits and vegetables. From interviews conducted, it has been gathered that the Rautes do not want to settle down and farm but rather want to continue gathering as a way of life.
