Almost all the nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine and only water and roughage reaches the large intestine via peristaltic movements. Before the waste material is excreted out, a large quantity of water is reabsorbed. Therefore, a defect in the re-absorption of water by the large intestine will cause one of these two disorders.
