Frideswide was, according to the earliest account, a king's daughter, who having chosen a life of virginity, refused marriage with a king. Being persecuted by her lover she fled from him, and at last took shelter in Oxford.
Frideswide' is the name of a Saxon princess and healer who became the Patron Saint of Oxford. Her name is still familiar in modern-day Oxford: home of the recently transformed Frideswide Square
