Cell undergo four stages of development and they are :

  1. G1 ( increase in size ) : during this stage the cell gradually increases in size before it gets to the second stage .
  2. S ( synthesis ) : In the this stage the cell copies its DNA  
  3. G2 ( preparation for mitosis ) : The cell begins its preparation for more growth and mitosis.
  4. M ( mitosis ) : cell division occurs at this stages.

The first three stages of the cell's life account for the span ( Interphase ) occurring between cell divisions ( mitosis ).

Hence we can conclude that the order of the stages of a cell's life is  G1 ---> S ----> G2 ----> M
