The pomegranate tree helps  to understand the different characteristics of Hassan and Amir's friendship. The two characters would meet, play and also read books at the pomegranate tree. Their friendship and that of the tree grew simultaneously.

Their friendship was so strong that they carved on the pomegranate tree "Amir and hassan, the sultan of Kabul."

The pomegranate tree observed a change in their friendship. Following the Assault on hassan by Assef, Amir started feeling guilty for what He did and could no longer face the pomegranate tree.
