The role of a cytoskeleton in a living cell is to supply structure to the cell, give the cell the ability to move and ensure proper cell division during cellular reproduction. The cytoskeleton contains three types of filaments within the cytoplasm, including intermediate filaments, microfilaments and microtubules.
The roles the cytoskeleton plays in a living cell are the following:
- Enables cell displacement
- Contributes to the organization of cell structures.
- It is involved in cell division.
- Provides support and movement to organelles.
The cytoskeleton is the internal structure that supports stress and compression forces while maintaining the shape of the cell.
This system made up of proteins that enables cell movement, is made up of microtubules, intermediate filaments and microfilaments.
- Microtubules participate in the movement of vesicles and organelles through the cytoplasm and form the cytoskeleton of structures for motility or locomotion such as cilia and flagella.
- The intermediate filaments are elements that provide resistance to mechanical stresses, and contribute to the maintenance of shape.
- Microfilaments participate in endocytosis and exocytosis and in association with the motor protein myosin, is responsible for contraction in muscle cells.
Therefore, we can conclude that the cytoskeleton fulfills the role of shaping the cell and the movement of the cell as a whole and the movement of organelles in the cytoplasm.
