Dear Editor

My name is John Smith, I'm 42 years old, I'm from Pennsylvania, and I'm a steel worker. I've been working at the steel mill since I was 15. I'm still strong but I would lie if I said that my body has not suffered from the work. My back aches sometimes, my legs too.

A 12-hour work day is too much. It is hard on the body and on the mind. Whether you are a steel worker or the owner of the mill, your body and mind need rest. Both rich and poor are citizens under the constutition and have their rights protected. I have the right to live, and to live, I need a balanced life. This is why we, the workers, propose the 8 hour workday: 8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest, and 8 hours of sleep. I am sure you will find this reasonable too if you give it a thought.

Sincerely, John Smith.
