The Pullman strike occurred when around four thousand workers from the Pullman Company were protesting against a reduction in wages. Debs organized the people of the factory and called in the union members of the American Railway Union to negotiate with the workers of the factory. However, Debs did not accept any terms of negotiations and the American Railway Union, who called a strike and obstructed the railway and transport communication of the Pullman Factory. The Supreme Court Summoned Debs for contempt of court, and the role of the Federal Government in regulating interstate commerce and guaranteeing the functioning of transportation and postal services was reassessed.
Further Explanation-
The Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Federal Government and ruled that the Federal Government had the right to regulate interstate commercial activities, and the smooth functioning of interstate communication, transportation, and railroad services. It also had the right to ensure the smooth functioning of the United States postal service, along with taking care of social and public welfare. The Pullman Strike severely disrupted railway and communication services throughout the Midwest of the United States. The American Railway Union formed a separate unit within the Pullman Company and organized the strike along with the other employees. The workers effectively blocked the railroads over Midwest America, disrupting transportation and communication. The President of American Railway Union, Debs, was highly pleased with the effectiveness of the strike, however the Federal Government had to use its troops to intercede in the strike, which incited a violent clash between the protestors and the troops. The Supreme Court called the ARU president Debs to appear before them for contempt of court and re-examined the role of the Federal Government in maintaining interstate commerce and transportation. The outcome of the Pullman Strike changed the course of Labour Laws in the United States.
