One’s ability to focus on a specific stimulus among many in the environment is called Selective attention.

What is Selective Attention?

Selective Attention is the process of directing our awareness to relevant stimuli while ignoring the irrelevant stimuli in the environment.

It is an important process as there is a limit about processing of the information and Selective Attention allows to receive only the vital in formation.

There are three important model related to Selective Attention:

1. Broadbent Filter's Model:

According to this model, physical characteristics of message are used to select one message for processing and others are lost.

Information from all the stimuli presented enters an unlimited buffer and one of them is selected for the processing based on its physical characteristics.

There is a limited capacity to process information, the filter prevents overburdening of information processing system.

2. Dichotic Listening Task:

It is the process of sending simultaneous message in person's right ear along with different messages in person's left ear.

The individual is asked to listen to both the messages and repeat what the individual has learnt.

3.Triesman's Attenuation Model:

It is in accordance with Broadbent Filter Model with one difference i.e. Treisman's filter attenuates rather than eliminates the unattended material.

Under this people can still process the meaning of the attended message.

Treisman demonstrated that participants were still able to identify the contents of an unattended message, indicating that they were able to process the meaning of both the attended and unattended messages.
