Read these paragraphs, noting the change of focus.

Suzanne summoned up all her courage and approached the yellow house. She rang the doorbell and smiled as she waited for someone to open the door. In her right hand, she had the samples of greeting cards she was trying to sell. In her left hand, she carried an order pad and a pen. She was ready to make her first sale. Then she realized that she had been standing there for several minutes, and she had heard no noise from within. She rang the doorbell again. She waited again. She took a deep breath. "I guess no one is at home," she said and turned to leave.

"Maybe someone is in here," she thought as she walked hesitantly up the steps to the green house next door. Her courage was quickly dwindling. Her resolve to be a good salesperson was getting shaky. She pressed the doorbell and put a smile on her face. Her heart quickened when she heard footsteps.

The focus change is in the point of view; first, she thought that she did her first sale and was ready to do it, as nobody opened, she thought there was nobody at home. Then, she changed her point of view because she thought to return and that she wasn't a good salesperson, however, she knocked on the door again with a smile on her face.

The primary change is a change of place.

Suszanne is giving her first try as a saleswoman: "She was ready to make her first sale." This first try is in a house; the house is empty: ' "I guess no one is at home," ' she said and turned to leave.'  Then, she gives it a try in another house: " she thought as she walked hesitantly up the steps to the green house next door."
