David Lewis Payne was born on December 30, 1836, in Indiana. In 1879 Payne organized a group of pilgrims to settle the Unassigned Lands of the Indian Territory.
Payne had many followers, who together with him made some interventions during the next years. These people had different purposes; some built homes and farms and others made money through land speculation.
