There were additional routes to the New World from Mozambique, Zanzibar and Madagascar on the east side of Africa. Most of the slaves from the east side were brought to Portuguese controlled Salvador in the state of Bahia, Brazil, along with many other slaves from Angola.

Most enslaved Africans were brought to America. By late 1600´s slavery was common all through the colonies. In the Southern states, property of slaves translated in social standing; as part of the effect of this, by the mid 1700´s about half of the population of the South were slaves.
