Due to the narrator's drunkenness he mistreated and eventually hanged his cat Pluto. When the new black cat appeared, it reminded him too much of Pluto and what he had done. He was being followed by the new cat, and its presence drove the narrator to utter madness in which while trying to kill the cat he ended up killing his wife instead.
