Use the model from problem 12 to estimate the population of bacteria at 9 hours. Type your answer below.

Problem 12:
Time (hours) 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
 Population (1000s) 5.1 3.03 1.72 1.17 1.38 2.35 4.08

So, I'm guessing there was a plot of this data you were supposed to use to estimate. I made my own in excel.

You can see the equation; y = 0.38x² - 2.45x + 5.1 that best fits the data is a 2nd degree polynomial.

The R² value tells you how well the equation fits the data, with 1 being the best fit. So we know our equation is good.

Looking at the chart, it looks like the bacteria will reach 14 (thousand). Using the equation, y = 0.38(9)² - 2.45(9) + 5.1

y = 13.83 (thousand) bacteria

Estimating is just a best guess, so you can probably go with 14,000 bacteria if just looking at a picture or 13,800 if given an equation.
