Winds are caused by differences in air pressure. Unequal heating of Earth’s surface creates areas of different pressure. Cooler areas have higher air pressure. Warmer areas have lower pressure. This causes air to move from high pressure to low pressure. This movement is the wind we feel.
The process that creates wind is the following:
Solar radiation generates temperature differences in the atmosphere, which gives rise to pressure differences and air movement.
This thermal energy from the Sun is transformed into kinetic energy, carrying air masses from one region of the planet to another.
That is to say, the different heating that the Sun produces at the Equator and at the Poles, as well as the difference in temperature between the lower and upper layers of the atmosphere, cause the movement of air within it and this is what we call wind.
The wind, therefore, is a meteorological phenomenon originated in the movements of rotation and translation of the Earth.
Generally, the wind is defined by its direction and intensity. The direction is given to us by the cardinal point of the horizon from which it comes and its intensity is the velocities of the moving air particles.
Therefore, we can conclude that with the different temperatures of the air, the wind is produced thanks to the consequence that the atmospheric pressures of our planet originate.
