To add the two terms you must convert both terms to a denominator of 6.
1/3=2/6
3/6=3/6
2/6+3/6=5/6

Before you add the fractions directly, you need to have common denominators. So, you need a GCF which is 6. 1/3 turns into 2/6 because you multiply 2 to both sides and get a common denominator. You can now add directly.
