Now, it is time to get some practice applying color. If you are working with a licensed cosmetologist who can supervise, you can find friends or family to practice on. Before you begin, make sure to get permission from your friend or family member as well as from your parent or guardian. You may also use a mannequin; there are affordable mannequins designed for cosmetologists to practice on that are available for purchase online. For this activity, you will need to choose two different coloring techniques discussed in the unit and perform them. One should be a special effect hair color. If you are using a mannequin, you can do one on one side of the head and the other on the other side. Otherwise, with appropriate supervision, you can use two volunteers. Make sure to document the process from the consultation to completion. You can do this by shooting a video or creating a presentation by taking pictures and describing the steps they illustrate. If you choose to do a video, narrate the steps so that an explanation is provided. Make sure that all video and audio elements are clear. If you choose to create a presentation, make sure that each step is clearly documented and that the explanatory narrative is free of mechanical errors. The steps required will depend on the service you choose. However, all processes should include the following steps: An evaluation of the client’s hair, including a discussion of natural tone and level A consultation and the signing of a release statement An explanation of the process and why it is a good fit for the client An explanation of how to handle any chemicals involved properly Any required preparation or mixing of the color with an explanation The application of the product using and describing the appropriate technique Any required rinsing or finishing steps A record of the process A recommendation for care after the process
